Heathfield Show Caterers – What An Amazing Day!

The Heathfield Show is the much-loved agricultural show that takes place in May each year.

With the previous caterers standing down after many years, we were asked if we wanted to take on the mantle of providing the catering for the members. No mean feat, we were told to expect in the region of 400 hungry farmers, traders and public, as well as a private luncheon for the committee members.

It sounded like the sort of opportunity that was right up our street. With experience of large scale event catering we set to work on the menus but most of all the logistics of how to tackle an operation of this size. As with any function, it’s all in the planning.

The day kicked off with a 4am start – that’s pretty early even for catering! Breakfast was to start from 6am and we were told to expect a stampede – hungry folk wanting to get fed and then get on with their own busy days – and they were not wrong! With 60 eggs frying at once in 2 huge paella pans we kept not only the eggs, but the bacon, sausages, beans, tomatoes and everything else rolling out.

With breakfast going through until 11:30am, it was then a quick turn around to start the lunch service for 12pm. Guests enjoyed a cold fork buffet including home-made quiche, poached salmon, and hand-carved ham as well as a selection of freshly made salads, followed by desserts.

It was a relentlessly busy day from start to finish but it went amazingly smoothly for our first time, and we had so many lovely comments from the punters, who by all accounts can be a tough crowd!

It was a great day and the Green Fig team really pulled out all the stops, many doing a 16 hour day. A few aches and pains at the end of the day but definitely worth it.
