In our hometown of Battle we catered for Sue and John – who are no strangers to Green Fig!
We had the pleasure a few years back of catering for them at their home in Battle where they celebrated an anniversary and had a marquee on the back of their house. This time the excuse for a good old knees up with all of their family and friends was John’s 80th Birthday.
This time the venue was the delightfully historic Pilgrims Restaurant, a stone’s throw from Battle Abbey. With one room kept clear for drinks and canapé served by Green Fig, the other room was certainly cosy with 54 of them in there, but they didn’t seem to mind one bit. With the fires roaring in the beautiful building the atmosphere was perfect for a January evening.
On the menu was one of our favourite dishes of the moment – Chef Ben’s slow-braised Ox-Cheek. Cooked gently for several hours the meat just melts in the mouth, and the rich gravy makes for the perfect winter warming dish. Other less meaty eaters selected the Herb Crusted Cod with a rich Tomato Sauce, both dishes served with plenty of Roast and New Potatoes and seasonal veggies.
As if they hadn’t eaten enough there was a Cheese Trolley that Sue and John had organised for those who didn’t fancy the very sweet & tangy Lemon Pot or the rich and decadent Chocolate Pot for dessert – or simply for those who wanted a pudding and cheese (of which there were several!).
The guests all seemed to be having a great time; there was much hilarity throughout the evening – which is always a good thing to be hearing from the kitchen!
Sue and John have assured us that they will be thinking of another reason to get the caterers in (i.e. us!) and have a good old shindig. Music to our ears!
